I Didn’t Realize My Closet Was Sabotaging My Brain Space
My hyper-practical guide to the closet systems that changed the way I get dressed in the morning.
At the start of the year, it feels like everyone silently agrees that it’s time to clean out our closets.
And really, is there any better feeling once you’re done? A tidy, well-organized wardrobe feels like the ultimate serotonin boost. (Ah, yes, I’m officially 30)
When I moved into my rental two years ago, I did a serious overhaul on the new-to-me closet. Many Target runs. Piles of tangled belts. Hours lost to the Container Store website and measuring every corner of my closet.
If we’re honest, like a lot of things in life, it got real messy before it got good. But it got good. And it truly changed the way I function day to day.
I don’t dread putting laundry away anymore because everything has a home. I don’t start every morning with decision fatigue… I can see what I have. And after a few years of testing what systems actually work for me, I figured I’d share what I’ve found so you can skip the deep internet digging.
So, here’s a tour of my closet setup, plus every link and hack I’d recommend if you’re also craving a total refresh.
I filmed a full video so you can really see how I’ve laid everything out and am using these hacks. And I’ve put a detailed breakdown and links to everything I use below.
And just so you know I’m legit… I gave my mom the full purge-to-organized pipeline treatment over the span of 4 days during the holidays. And her pantry is now unrecognizable in the best way.
Shelf Maximizers

Pipe Rack for Extra Hanging Space
First things first. My closet layout was set up pretty poorly, so I installed this pipe rack on a wall that was completely blank (whoever built this house was not a woman), and it literally tripled the size of what I can hold in my closet. Came on amazon & was under $300.
Shoe Risers
These gave me extra shelf real estate for my favorite boots and heels. I’ll also occasionally store sandals in these wooden boxes if I’m short on space.
Accessory Wranglers
I finally accepted that leaving jewelry and sunglasses scattered across my dresser isn’t chic, it’s stressful. And when I can actually see my accessories, I wear them way more

Multi-Use Sunglass Storage: Sunnies are always the cherry on top of my look so I wanted to be able to see and reach for them super easily. My aunt actually turned me onto using acrylic nail polish racks for sunnies, and they work perfectly.
The Belt Solution that Changed my Life: I’ve started to collect vintage belts like magnets, and they were laying in a tangled pile until I ordered these belt organizers on amazon.
I will say, when you’re getting close to 60 belts, they start to become a little clunky, but for the average person they’re perfect – and I personally need to see them visually to remember they’re there
Genius hat contraption: I never knew what to do with all my baseball caps until I found this.
Stackable Jewelry Boxes: My love for accessories runs deep and my collection is far from minimal so I use a mix of stackable jewelry boxes, standing necklace holders and acrylic wall hooks to keep everything organized and on display. And being able to stack more boxes and rows of necklace hooks as my collection inevitably grows is such a win.
Skincare & Vanity Organizer
While not technically part of my closet, I’d be wrong not to share this storage hack for all my skincare. It fits a ton and rotates so I can easily grab what I need.
Folding & Hanging Hacks

Sleek Acrylic Hangers
I made the switch to all acrylic for a clean, cohesive look — and it feels so much more polished. I got mine from the Container Store which I love, but if I could do it over I’d pick these on Amazon because they’re cheaper & literally the same thing. I bought these for my mom’s closet overhaul & can attest that they’re just as good.
Revolutionary Pant Hanging Trick
I saw this folding method on TikTok, tried it with these baby hangers, even though I thought I’d never be able to change my ways.
Can confirm I’m never going back. It’s wild how much neater they hang and way more space-efficient than whatever I was doing before.
Skirt & Coat Hangers
I use these clip-style skirt hangers that won’t ruin delicate fabric, and sturdier wooden ones for bulkier coats.
Tiny but Mighty Habits

Rolling my tanks & sweats
A tiny tweak that helps more than you’d think. I keep all my sweat sets and basics in drawers, rolled Marie Kondo–style so I can grab what I want without digging.
Catch-All Bins
Perfect for extra buttons, sunglass cases, scarves, or off-season shoes. Nothing fancy here, just a few neutral bins to keep things out of sight but accessible
Rolling Clothing Rack
This is my packing side kick. It can fold down but I usually keep it in my room just next to my closet when I’m pulling looks to style.
It helps me so much to the things I pull hanging together so I can edit from there.
Some things I still have yet to crack… more space for coats, and how the heck to store bags. So if anyone has tips, please do tell.
If you’re just tackling one drawer or the whole thing, I hope this gives you some ideas (or at least a nudge to finally buy those matching hangers).
Love you,
April
